Why It's Important to Keep Your Cat and Dog's Nails Trimmed

In the outside world, claws on cats and dogs are important to their survival. However, pets that are doted upon by their pet parents don't have to rely on claws for food, defense, or climbing. Therefore, trimming both a cat and dog's nails periodically is important.

The Importance of Trimming Cat's Nails

Trimming your cat's claws is actually an important part of grooming, even though a lot of feline owners don't trim their kitty's nails. Trimming your cat's claws prevents them from getting so long and sharp that they inadvertently cause injury to themselves. However, trimming cat's nails protects you and your family from scratches while also negating the possibility of damaged furniture and curtains around the house.

How often should you trim your cat's nails?

It is a good idea to try to trim your cat's claws every few weeks. While this may sound like a lot, it is actually a lot easier to do the trimming more frequently so you don't have to take so much off at one time.

Tips for Trimming a Cat's Nails

Invest in a good pair of nail clippers designed for use on pets. These come in several different styles, but in general, you want a set of clippers that have a nice sharp blade so the tip of the claw is not being sloughed off purely by blunt force.

A few tips to help include:

  • - Get someone to hold the cat while you trim if possible
  • - Use good cat treats for a distraction
  • - Press gently on the cat's paw to extend the claws
  • - Carefully trim off just the tip, avoid the pink "quick"
  • - Start with front claws first
  • - Get one claw at a time if your cat is especially stressed

The Importance of Trimming Dog's Nails

Dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors often wear their claws down as they run and play. However, if you don't trim your dog's nails, they will often continue to grow to an unreasonable length. Dogs are especially prone to injury to their paws if their claws are too long because they get caught on everything from fabric to grass. Plus, a dog with long claws can cause injury to you or your family.

How often should you trim your dog's nails?

Dogs should get a nail trim about every three to four weeks. However, this can also depend on how quickly your dog's nails actually grow. You basically want to keep the claw from touching the ground.

Tips for Trimming a Dog's Nails

Just like with cats, you will need a high-quality set of clippers. Dog nails are denser and harder to cut, so it is best to get a vet-approved set of clippers built for the task. A few other tips to remember:

  • - Start with front paws before doing the back
  • - Give your dog something for distraction, such as a new toy
  • - Take only the tip of the nail off
  • - Be especially careful if your dog has dark nails; you won't see the quick
