The Truth About Dry Cat Food & Why We Don’t Recommend It

Posted by Yushira Budhram on

cat-eating-wet-foodIf you’re a cat owner, you know it can be tricky to find the right food for your pet. One thing that is important to understand is that cats get most of their hydration from their food. That’s why we don’t recommend dry cat food. Let’s look at the truth about dry cat food and why we recommend other products.

The Dangers of Dry Cat Food

Dry cat food is made up mostly of carbohydrates and proteins, with minimal moisture content. This means that cats must rely on water from other sources in order to stay hydrated. Unfortunately, many cats do not get enough water and this can lead to chronic dehydration and health problems such as kidney disease.

Many cats also suffer from “dry cat syndrome,” which refers to a number of ailments caused by a diet consisting primarily of dry food. These ailments include dental decay, urinary tract infections, diabetes, obesity, and other digestive disorders. In addition to health issues related to dehydration, another issue with dry cat foods is that they often contain fillers such as wheat gluten or other grains which can cause allergies in some cats.

Alternatives To Dry Cat Food

We always recommend providing your cat with a balanced diet that includes wet or real food options rather than just dry food. While there are some high-quality dry foods available, they tend to be more expensive than other types of cat foods and may still not provide enough moisture for your pet's needs.  Here are three alternatives we highly recommend:

  • Smallbatch raw cat food –This type of natural raw diet contains all the nutrients your pet needs without any fillers or artificial ingredients. It is also easy to digest and provides plenty of hydration for cats due to its high moisture content.
  • My perfect pet cooked cat food –This type of cooked meal offers all the benefits of fresh raw ingredients without the need for preparation or refrigeration time! All recipes are free from fillers like wheat gluten or grain ingredients and are cooked in small batches for maximum freshness and nutrition every time!
  • Open Farm wet cat food –This brand offers delicious gourmet wet meals made with sustainably sourced ingredients like wild-caught fish, organic vegetables, cage-free chicken and free-range turkey! All recipes are grain-free and have added vitamins + minerals for optimal health benefits!

Finding the right type of food for your feline friend can be tricky but understanding how important it is for them to stay hydrated should make it easier! We strongly advise against feeding your kitty only dry foods as this can lead to dehydration-related illnesses down the line so try out one (or all!) of our recommended wet/raw options instead! Not only will they provide plenty of water but they will also provide essential vitamins + minerals necessary for optimal health benefits too! Your furry friend will thank you later!
